Ottawa’s 3rd Annual Six-Week Introduction to Christian Meditation

Six weeks. A “blink” in the span of creation but a time of growth and learning for fourteen people who registered at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Kanata, Ontario, near Ottawa. We gathered the first evening, each carrying our own experiences, desires and hopes for what the next six weeks would bring.

Over the six week period we were treated to a diversity of experiences ranging from various speakers, DVD presentations, taped talks by John Main, instructions on the “how to” of meditation and each evening a communal meditation time.

From our speakers we learned about meditation and its roots. The life of John Main was presented in such a way that by the end of the talk one felt as though a new friend had been made. Our speakers were seasoned meditators who graciously consented to share their meditation journeys with us and to field any questions we had at the end of their talks.

The importance of being faithful to the daily practice of our meditation and the benefits of finding and joining a weekly meditation group for support was reinforced.

A fellow participant indicated to me that he truly appreciated being able to participate in the introductory course. He is currently meditating with a group but found himself at times feeling a little “at sea”. He said it was very satisfying to go back to the very foundations, so to speak.

As one sensitive to nature, this experience reminds me of a rose garden. Six weeks ago fourteen new roses were planted in God’s garden, buds tightly furled, mysterious, with potential for great beauty. Under the gentle, compassionate nurturing of Marg McGowan they are blossoming in beauty and grace.

I complete the course with a renewed sense of peace and fulfillment. Thank you.
